Site Outage - April 8, 2005
Sometime during the day, Dreamhost appears to have changed the configuration of its servers which has resulted in the gzip encoded html documents being served as application/x-gzip rather than gzip encoded text/html.
This means that browsers would attempt to download the gzipped html files on this site rather than displaying them. I have temporarily removed the gzipped encoding from most files on this site and everything should be working again.
Update: The issue appears to have been when
Dreamhost edited the mime.types file for the Apache installation
to actually specify .gz
as having mime type application/x-gzip
rather than leaving it specified without an extension. The work
around is to create content which should be gzip encoded with a
different extension, but that is a pain.
Does anyone know how to work around the "download dialog" issue
for encoded content when gz
is mapped to a mime
type?
